Olaus Magnus, Archbishop of Upsala, tells of his travels in Norway while in exile. In Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus, 1555, [Magnus’] writes of ‘…Scricfinia… “[where] the inhabitants achieve remarkable speed in the use of certain planks bent bow-like in front and fixed to their feet, using a stick to guide them…” ‘ 9
