The oldest known depiction of a skier shows a staff (the single ski suspiciously resembles a snowboard and the stick has a curious curve in it). Rune Flaten reports in the journal of the 3rd FIS Ski History Congress, 2004, that:
‘[I]n the summer of 2001, a rock carving was found by people cleaning the area around the famous rock carving of a reindeer at BØla… Norway… The subject of the carving is undoubtedly a skier. Regarding the age, archaeologist Kalle Sognnes has set the maximum age at 6000 years… The carving depicts a person on skis, carrying one staff or ski pole…’ 1
